The Subject of the Masters in Mass Media Studies shall be as follows:
- Eight course modules and extended essay of Postgraduate Diploma.
- MMMM 613 – Proposal and Dissertation Writing
- MMMM 633 – Media Economy
- MMMM 623 MMS 133 Online Media Studies
- MMMM 621 A Dissertation
Evaluation
In each course module, 30 percent of the aggregate marks shall be allocated on the basis of Classroom Test, Assignments, Term papers and Mini Projects. Repeat exercise will not be provided in cases where a student misses any of the above course work evaluation. The balance of 70 percent shall be awarded according to the performance at the final written examination. 30% shall be distributed as follows:
Class Room Test – 10%
Assignments – 20%
Candidate’s performance in the course modules and the extended essay/dissertation shall be graded according to the following grading scheme:
Grade A 75% – 100%
Grade B 65% – 74%
Grade C 50% – 64%
Grade D 31% – 49%
Grade E 0% – 39%
-Each module will be of 45 hours carries 3 credits, six credits for the extended essay concluding up to a maximum of 12,000words. Post Graduate Diploma candidate will have earned 30 credits to be qualified for the award of the Diploma.
-Masters in Mass Media Studies candidates will have to earn 60 credits(From post Graduate Diploma 30 Credit, From Three Course nine Credit and Dissertation with 21 Credit)to be qualified for the award of the Degree.
Duration
The Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Media Studies lasts for one year and consists of 80 teaching sessions (240 hours) with each being of 03 hours duration. Classes will be held on Sundays from 9.00-4.00 p.m. (except for public holidays) at the Department of Sinhala, Arts faculty of University of Colombo. Master’s in Mass Media Studies lasts for two years and consis of 30 teaching sessions (90 hours) (with post graduate diploma) with each being of 03 hours duration and writing a dissertation.
Evaluation
– Each module will be of 45 hours which carry 3 credits and one credit hour for an assignment. Post graduate diploma candidate, will have to earn 30 credits to be qualified to obtain the certificate. Those who secure above 60% marks for each course module can proceed to Master’s in Mass Media studies. Master’s in Mass Media Studies candidates will have to earn 60 credits to be qualified to obtain the certificate.
– The coordinator certifies that he/she completed the course of studies leading to the examination by attending the required proportion of lectures (generally deemed to be 80% of the course), tutorial classes and others of instruction in the subject matter of each course.
