Introduction
Sri Palee Campus is located in Wewala, Horana and it consists of approximately 32 acres of land that extends in a hilly area with scenic beauty with a large number of forest trees that have grown throughout the Campus. A typical working day has a population of over 800 people, including students, academic and non-academic members, service providers, and people from construction projects. As a result of the aforementioned population and maintenance activities, the Campus produces a large amount of waste on a daily basis, which has the potential to be composted and sold.
Table 01. Waste materials are generated in Sri Palee Campus
Organic Waste | Inorganic Waste | e Waste |
1. Food Waste (Canteen, Hostel and office premises) | Types of plastics (HDPE, LDPE, PET) | CFL and LED Bulbs |
2. Sweeping leaves | White papers (After used and rough used) | Electronic devices |
3. Grass cutting refuses | News papers | Batteries |
4. Weeding refuses | Cardboards
5. Pruning refuses | Types of iron (Can, Tin, iron refused at construction sites)
6. | Coconut shells | |
7. | Glass (White and Color) |
Objectives of the proposed waste management mechanism
This project has three great objectives that must be accomplished.
Objective 01: Separate the waste material at source level and reduce the generation.
Objective 02: Store the separated waste in a specified place and start the compost production by using organic (degradable) materials.
Objective 03: Sell the recyclable materials to the outside buyers.
Methodology
To achieve those objectives the following strategies have been implementing and practicing in the Sri Palee Campus.
Objective 01. Separate the waste material at source level and reduce the generation
Strategies to achieve the objective 01
- Placing of waste separation bins with standard color codes.
- Placing of separate PET collecting bins to the Campus.
- Implementing a refuse collection method for sweeping and grass cutting.
- Awareness and poster campaign to increase the separation and reduce the use of polythene.
Objective 02. Store the separated waste in a specified place and Start the compost production by using organic (degradable) materials.
Strategies to achieve the objective 02
- Constructing a Composting Unit to the Campus.
- Implementing a storage facility for recyclable materials.
- Implementing a research based value enriching mechanism for compost
Objective 03. Sell the recyclable materials to the outside buyers.
Strategies to achieve the objective 03
- Identifying recyclable waste material in the Campus
- Calling quotations from buyers and getting approvals (as per the prevailing guidelines).
- Implementing a fund generation mechanism by waste.
